Book a Cruise for an Ocean-Bound Holiday

Book a Cruise for an Ocean-Bound Holiday

Transport yourself to a land far, far away. Close your mind’s eye for a moment and just imagine: Water so blue under your ship that you can see almost to the ocean floor. Dolphins romping and playing as they race beside the ship. Spot a whale in the near distance, rising from the ocean deep, curiosity overcoming caution to take a peek.

All this and more is quite possible when you book a cheap cruise and enjoy three days, four days or more spent island hopping or shopping in native markets.

Enjoy fresh fish or local delicacies for lunch before you explore a port town for the afternoon. Take albums’ worth of pictures of the sights you see, of yourself, and of friends or family that accompany you.

On board, you enjoy gourmet meals and exotic drinks. You dance to orchestral music or ‘get down’ to disco or rock. Enjoy a jazz ensemble as you relax in yet another lounge.

Head to the card rooms. Play snooker or pool. Throw a dart or two and flaunt your talent.

Share a romantic meal with a special someone before you take a stroll around the deck in the moonlight and share wishes and dreams as the ocean cushions and gently rocks the ship.

Tips for Hiring A Car In Ireland

Tips for Hiring A Car In Ireland

Today, we’re going to cover a few basics that will help make hiring a car in Ireland as easy as possible. First of all, be sure to shop around. Although it’s always nice to go to a physical business and deal with a real person, you can usually find the best rates by booking online, well before you visit Ireland.

Try a basic Internet search for related terms, like “car hiring Ireland,” to ensure that you see all of your available options. When it comes to 121 Car Hire Ireland is well respected for it’s friendly customer service. When calling or visiting your friendly customer representative, be sure to inquire about what credit cards the company accepts, to avoid delays.

If you are new to English or from a distant region, try to be patient when talking to the locals, as phrase in a local dialect could take a few extra seconds to parse. Finally, be sure to make copies of all your credit card receipts and confirmations. Traveling can be stressful, even in a beautiful nation like Ireland, so it’s important to keep your receipts. With just a little basic preparation, hiring a car in Ireland can be as easy and fun as hiring in your own local area.

The Old Man of Hoy

The Old Man of Hoy

Jutting into the ocean air like a skyscraper made of stone, the Old Man of Hoy has long delighted visitors to Scotland’s Orkney Islands. Over 400 feet tall and just under 400 years old, this sea stack has been the subject of countless paintings, sketches, and photographs. Its time, however, seems to be nearing an end, as many geologist have concluded that it could slide under the waves within the next decade.

This means that those who want to experience its rugged, often mist-shrouded beauty should act without delay. The exact date on which the red sandstone stack separated from the coastal headlands near Rackwick Bay is unknown, though it’s believed to be after the middle of the 18th century. Early sketches and paintings of the Old Man, notably ones by William Daniell, show that by the early 19th century the tower of stone had separated into the sea and formed distinctive ‘legs’ around its base, creating the anthropoidal appearance that led to its popular name.

Though these legs have since washed away, visitors to the island can still purchase prints of these sketches at shops and museums across the Island of Hoy and other islands in the Orkney chain. Visitors can also attempt to climb the Old Man, if they dare. First surmounted by Tom Patey, Chris Bonington, and Rusty Baillie in 1966, up to 50 climbing parties now take up the challenge of ascending the vertical stack each year. Anyone skilled and brave enough to make it to the top can enter their name in an old RAF flight log book that’s buried within a cairn at the tower’s peak.

Those hoping to view or photograph the Old Man from the sea can do so from the MV Hamnavoe, a ferry that runs from Thurso to Stromness. Anyone who would like to visit it from land, however, also has the added treat of the nearby Dwarfie Stane. Cut from a single massive block of red sandstone, the Dwarfie Stane is a chambered tomb that dates back to the Neolithic period. Legendary home of the dwarf ‘Trollid’, the mysterious tomb, like the Old Man, has become a staple of local myth and folklore.

My River Cruises in Russia

My River Cruises in Russia

I have always thought River cruises in Russia have believed to be one of the loveliest ways to spend any holiday when going for a cruise.  I have been on many vocational cruising trips but without doubt the one that stands out in my mind was one of my river cruises in Russia.   On a river cruise in Russia you are able to learn a great deal about Russian traditions and customs.  You will also be able to take in some magnificent sights.

I embarked on a Russian cruise in Moscow where there are some magnificent sights to see just from the river.  The first stop on my river cruise in Russia was the city of Yaroslavl which in 2010 celebrated its millennium.  This gorgeous city is very famous for the beauty of the embankments which of course are easily observed from the boat.

Another superb part of my river cruise in Russia was a visit to Kostrama.  Here the streets all fan out from a central square.  This is an 18th and 19th layout that provides the visitor with the sight of medieval peasant homes plus the golden dome of Ipatievsky Monastery and its museum.

There is a plethora of cruises to choose from around the world but I would fully recommend a river cruise in Russia as my top choice.
